Adorable Black Male Chihuahua - a Total Stud!

This little guy is a total stud. He fell hard for the pretty little Yorkshire Terrier that he was introduced to. He shows rather shy in the kennel, but loses all fear once he gets out in to the yard. I even lost him for a second, then found him trying to make friends with the big dogs. I managed to snag his attention with this pretty thing:

His impound number is 17-1853.

Sweet shepherd puppy and gorgeous bird dog need homes!

This adorable pointer dog came to the shelter as a stray. So far, no owner has stepped forward to claim. He is a young, energetic cutie who is already responding to training. His impound number is 17-1857

He was introduced to this cute 7 month old shepherd mix named Tiny. These two went crazy for each other! Tiny's impound .number is 17-1845

Here is the happy result of their meeting. They had much more fun together after the camera stopped recording.

Red Australian Shepherd mix with Shep/Lab mix puppy 17-1664 and 17-1665

These two are so sweet and the bigger one, the aussie mix, is so gentle with the puppy. In true cattle dog fashion, the aussie mix will give direct eye, waiting for instruction, when put in a sit. Seriously, my favorite trait with cattle dogs <3. The aussie mix is male, approx 3 years old and the puppy, also male, is about 6 months.
Their Los Banos impound numbers are 17-1664 and 17-1665 and their stray hold ends 10/12/17.

Westhighland Terrier Mixes Mother and Daughter (?) 17-1674 and 17-1675

These two look like they may be mother and daughter. Listed as terriers, one Facebook follower with a sharp eye said that they look like Westie mixes. They actually look like Phoenix on a good day (RIP little buddy <3).
One is likely 5 plus years of age and the other may be about 3 years. The older one has multiple mammary tumors that may need to be dealt with. They are super cute and will make someone a lovely pet (or pair!).
Their Los Banos Shelter impound numbers are 17-1674 and 17-1675. Their stray hold ends 10/14/17.

Female Grey Poodle 17-1676 with Tan Terrier 17-1660

Cute grey small poodle who came in as a stray. She is missing an ear! If only dogs could talk, I am interested in this story. She is older - 10 plus, but still has LOTS of bounce. Los Banos Animal Shelter impound number 17-1676. Her stray hold ends 10/14/2017.

Spark 17-1624

How cute is this little black sugar plum? Spark came in to us as a stray on October 2 and his people still have not shown up to look for him. Spark is a black something-or-other: could be pit bull mixed with something smaller, or a boston terrier mixed with something bigger. Whatever he is, he has energy for days. He loves to rough house play with others and really loves to play with squeaky toys. He is just a pup, at about 8 months of age. He is old enough to learn new tricks very quickly and will love long walks on the beach <3

Broken

     I am heart broken.

     Not angry.

     Just.....sad.

I work twenty or more hours per week at our little animal shelter. I spend my own money on gas, in my own car, to get these guys out of the shelter and to safety. I help spread the word to those who network. Some days, I provide food, water, and love. Today, none of that was enough.

Many people will blame the shelter system. In truth, though, our hands are tied. We don't have enough kennels. There will never be enough kennels, no matter how many are built. Rescue groupls are full. The Fourth of July celebrations were like a war zone, for five whole nights. The fault here lies with the owners who could not be bothered to look for their lost dog. Or, the pet sitter, because sometimes owners go on vacation. Or, with our disposable society, who casts away the old in favor of something new. No matter what the reason was, a bunch of beautiful dogs have lost their lives.

There is no point in being angry. Anger takes too much energy. When I saw that these guys had been put down, all I could do is sigh, maybe mutter an expletive or two, and move on to the next group of animals who need help.

I am so thankful that these beauties got to get out and play for their last evening. None of us, not the dogs, my volunteer partner, nor I, knew that it was these dogs' last night, so it was just happiness and love. No sadness. And, I got to immortalize these beauties with some photographs.

RIP sweet babies. Gone but not forgotten.

New Puppy?

As pet owners and lovers, we've all been there. We see a cute, fluffy baby and we are instantly overcome with temptation. Or, we see a gorgeous photo of an animal and we romanticize what life would be like with a beautiful companion such as what you see.

Image is everything. A picture is worth a thousand words. We desire to be seen and complimented and the beautiful animal on the other end of the leash is an extension of us. When we choose our next pet, we think in terms of "I want a German Shepherd because I had one as a kid", or "I want a Pomeranian because they are so cute and fluffy!". Rarely, do we think in terms of what is going to be the right fit for our family.

"The road to hell is paved with good intentions" John Ray, 1670

Of course, there are people who purchase dogs for malicious reasons. But, most of us have good intentions when we seek our new furry friend. Impulse and a lack of research, though, can have dire consequences. One such example is this beautiful fawn Akita. He is a big, fluffy, gorgeous 1.5 year old male. While I am using this dog as an example, I do not know his living situation and will not speculate about his family. What I do know is that this dog escaped his yard and bit the good samaritan who tried to alert his owners that he was out.

Akita on bite quarantine
What a beauty, right? I'll tell you, this dog is PISSED. Like many other dogs whose breed was historically used for protection or fighting, the akita does not like to be told what to do.

Akitas, as described by yourpurebredpuppy.com are:
  • Strong willed
  • Possessive of food
  • Aggressive when not properly socialized
  • Aggressive toward other dogs of their same sex
  • Aggressive toward other animals
Many Akitas are willful, obstinate, and dominant (they want to be the boss)
and will make you prove that you can make them do things.

This observation by yourpurebredpuppy.com is not what you think of when you see a cute, fluffy puppy, is it?

In my past, I've had two akitas, one was a purebred adult adopted from the animal shelter as a three year old, and the other was mixed with german shepherd, adopted as a puppy from the animal shelter. My first akita, Kiko, was submissive and gentle, but also an escape artist, which led to his untimely demise. My second, Tigger, was all of the things listed above. He was a biter, possessive of food, his space, and his people. He and our other male dog (a chow/retriever mix) had big, loud, bloody, dramatic fights in the yard. He was my son's biggest protector, and also my son's biter. While I loved that dog, I was also afraid of him and, sadly, was relieved when Tigger passed from old age.

What can you do? Research, research, research when considering your next family member. Some things to consider:
  • How much time do you have for training and socialization
  • Your current pack - sex, age, are they already spayed or neutered?
  • How big is your home and yard
  • How secure is your fencing
  • Is this a dog that can be kept outside in the yard, or do they need a dedicated kennel
  • Can they be left unsupervised in the house
My current pack consists of four dogs, varying in age from about 17 years old on down to 7 months old. Is my pack ideal? Oh, HELL NO. We lost one suddenly and unexpectedly, which upset the dynamic of the pack. One was a regrettable sympathy adoption, who has also greatly upset the dynamic of the pack. I will say, though, that when I had the luxury of thoughtfully researching and choosing a dog, I was looking at age (a puppy, old enough to no longer be too delicate), a female (to be a companion for our male puppy), and size (not too small, hardy enough to play with our very active Keeshond). I did not look at breed, instead looking at what was available in these criteria. Outside of normal puppy behavior of chasing cats and chewing inappropriately, we have had very few problems with our beautiful Shasta.

Short Lived Freedom for Rescue Puppies

It is with a heavy heart that I write about these puppies. If you've spent any time reading Phoenix and Friends, you will know about Phoenix, my rough coat Jack Russell puppy. I have spent 5 months and nearly two thousand dollars to diagnose and treat Phoenix's self mutilation disease. I really believe that every puppy deserves a chance at life.

I was at the shelter when these babies arrived. The finder was agitated and desperate to find help for these puppies. She had found them outside during one of our brutal heat waves and tried to care for them. Two pups had already died in her hands.

Overheated puppies

I was able to get these pups cooled down and eating. Here are the four soon after they came in to our shelter.

Border Collie mix puppies

My daughter and I spent part of my birthday transporting these cuties to meet with another transport volunteer in order to get them to a foster/rescue home. We succeeded. We gave these precious puppies their chance at life.

I found out later that the lone boy in this group did not even make it to his foster home. He went into severe distress on the ride and the entire litter was rushed to the vet, where he ended up being euthanized and the girls were given a clean bill of health. Unfortunately, two of the girls succumbed to the same mysterious illness as their brother.

Border collie mix puppies

The biggest puppy, the one second from left, is the lone survivor of what was originally a litter of six. Hopefully, she lives a long, full, happy life.

I was successful in what I had set out to do - give these babies a chance. I am happy that these babies had people who fought for their lives and gave them love and a chance. Of course, I wish that their freedom had not been so short lived.

420 Puppy Update

Oh, my gosh, I think its working. The first night on the VetCBD, Phoenix completely stopped scratching. It was like a miracle! Except, the effect was gone the next morning. That was Tuesday, though, and today is Friday. Finally, Phoenix is laying off the constant scratching. He still has episodes when his xanax, gabapentin, and rimadyl wear off twice a day. But, he is slowly returning to a normal Jack Russell puppy during the day. He fights with the cats, jumped on my dining table (!!), and will let me pick him up again.

Phoenix and Shasta

We are still not out of the woods, yet, as there is still the risk of infection. He will NOT let me apply topicals and baths are out of the question, unless there is a severe need. We've dealt with infection before, and fingers crossed, we will not have to again. It can be a bit spendy.

Phoenix and Shasta

Along this journey, as I have visited veterinarians, and kept our local animal control officer updated (he knew the pup from the shelter), everyone has expressed surprise at my level of commitment. Most people would have had him euthanized by now. At his best, he is a normal, misbehaving JRT. At his worst, he is highly aggressive, having attacked nearly every member of our family so far. It has been a commitment for sure, but I would do this for a human child. I took this dog because I felt like he deserved a chance at life, he was only 12 weeks old at the time. Do I regret my decision to take him? Yes. And, no. Yes, because he has turned our lives UPSIDE DOWN. And, no, because I still feels like he deserves a chance at life. As long as he is still in this fight, so am I.
